The Union of Students in Ireland is uniting students across the country to fight the reintroduction of college fees.

Why USI Opposes Fees.
  • Fees stop people from going to college and cause many others to drop out. USI believes that nobody should be locked out of education because they can’t afford it.
  • Fees mean longer hours at part-time jobs, leading to more stress and lower grades.
  • Fees leave students in debt – often for life.
  • College is already hugely expensive without fees – €10,000 per year of study according to Bank of Ireland (includes Registration Fee, accommodation, rent, books, bills, food etc). Imagine the cost of fees on top of this.
  • Once fees come in, they will only go up and more and more people will be charged.
Myths about Fees:Myth: Free Education subsidises the rich to go to college.Fact: Free Education has led to more people entering college than ever before. Fees would rob thousands of the chance to become better educated. To really tackle inequality, the government must increase the grant and investing in primary and secondary education.

Myth: Fees will only affect the wealthy.Fact: Studies show fees hit poor and middle-income people the most. Experts recognise that even if fees were introduced only for certain families, they would soon need to be extended to more and more people.

Myth: The taxpayer can’t afford Free Fees.Fact: College graduates earn more, and so pay much more tax. This means more hospitals, more schools, a better economy. Free Fees is an investment in society that pays off massively. Student Campaigning Works:In 2003 students campaigned against the government’s attempt to bring back fees – and we won.

United, we can beat fees again.
